SAILING BIO

When I was about ten-years-old I bought a little paperback book on how to sail.  I must have read that book a hundred times.  Even though I would be an adult before a actually even tried to learn to sail, I never forgot about that book and would occassionaly leaf through it and dream of sailing.

I must have told my brother-in-law, Nick, about this (I really can't remember telling him) because one day he told me that he saw quite a few little sailboats right off the Sand Key Bridge (Clearwater, FL).  He said it looked like it was some sort of class.  I drove down to Sand Key and stopped at the Clearwater Community Sailing Center.  The sign out front advertised sailing lessons.  My wife and I signed up and the rest, as "They" say, is history.

From Sunfish to small Hobies, to our first sailboat, a Boston Whaler Harpoon, to our first "big" boat, an Island Packet 40 sailing has become a part of me, and I have become a part of Sailing.

We chartered  numerous boats and sailed  Florida, BVI and Bahamas and obtained numerous ASA certifications before buying our IP 40.   Then came ASA instructor certifications and getting our USCG Captain's license.

From deliveries, to orientation sails, to teaching classes, to sea trial/survey jobs, I've gained a wealth of sailing experiences and knowledge and met many people who are a part of this life that I only dreamed of when first read that old "How to Sail" paperback when I was ten.

The fun part is, there are many times, especially on the water or just being around boats, that I still feel like a little kid.

FAVORITE QUOTES

I would rather be ashes than dust!

I would rather that my spark should burn out in a brilliant blaze than it should be stifled by dry rot.

I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet.

The proper function of man is to live, not to exist.

I shall not waste my days in trying to prolong them.

     I shall use my time.

Jack London

     AND...

"What does a man need – really need?  A few pounds of food each day, heat and shelter, six feet to lie down in – and some form of working activity that will yield a sense of accomplishment.  That’s all – in the material sense.  And we know it.  But we are brainwashed by our economic system until we end up in a tomb beneath a pyramid of time payments, mortgages, preposterous gadgetry, playthings that divert our attention from the sheer idiocy of the charade.

The years thunder by.  The dreams of youth grow dim where they lie caked in dust on the shelves of patience.  Before we know it, the tomb is sealed.

Where then lies the answer?  In choice.  Which shall it be: bankruptcy of purse or bankruptcy of life?"
